Here's something from Margaret Singer's magnificent book Cults In Our Midst

 First a quote that struck me instantly. It reminded me of an analysis of Scientology written by a class XII auditor. She said Hubbard's writings can seem contradictory and paradoxical. That is actually intentional.

The more complicated and filled with contradictions the new system is and the more difficult it is to learn, the more effective the conversion process will be. ( page 67 )

The contradictions serve to thoroughly confuse Hubbard's victims and help to increase their suggestibility. With hundreds or thousands of contradictions in millions of words of doctrine the effect is compounded by unimaginably immense repetition.

This thread is to me the most significant I have to offer to date - in my opinion even surpassing the Black Heart of Dianetics and Scientology; the Black heart of L Ron Hubbard and Insidious Enslavement :Study Technology .This could not be possible without the help of Jon Atack and Arnie Lerma . I am going to with this attempt to outline a method of mind control that explains a lot of things clearly in Dianetics and Scientology previously left unclear .

This may inspire far more attacks than other earlier threads . THAT does not disprove or effect the accuracy of the information one bit . I will try to explain something in great detail and with many examples.

There is a principle that I learned long before Scientology that greatly accelerated my recovery and ability to reject and investigate the technology of Scientology. I have been in many very poor inner city areas and when dealing with hustlers, pimps , thieves , and drug dealers a simple piece of info was taught to me at a very young age . I have had the experience of dealing with pathological liars and found that the behavior is instinctive for them . I was told - he lies so much he lies even when he is telling the truth ! That means that a person SO thoroughly uses confusing contradictions in their speech that EVEN when they tell the truth -OR part of it - they are STILL working to overwhelm and confuse you ! I during my investigation of the true nature of Scientology reached a point in the first few weeks where I realized that Hub MUST have known the tech did not work AND that he had to work very very hard to hide this for decades !

I knew that he MUST have been a pathological liar and used persuasion and so thoroughly mixed lies that sorting them out would further confuse a victim as the doctrine is a reported thirty-five million words long and often studied in a unique sequence that cannot be recreated for each individual !

I knew to the core of my being within two months to never think in his terms or believe anything  he said or wrote no matter how genuine it seemed  !

If he says the sky is blue - I KNOW it is not or he is trying to use an angle or trick ! NEVER let your guard down ! I had a conflict as in studying critical thinking I ran into black and white thinking , the genetic fallacy and the composition/division fallacy ALL of which SEEM to leave a crack open for " some good " to be found in Scientology. I thought my ABSOLUTE rejection could be illogical or an emotional reaction .BUT I could not escape KNOWING absolute rejection is right !

The conflict SEEMED counter-intuitive .

I NOW believe I have the right answer on what happens to Scientologists and makes COMPLETE rejection of ALL Dianetics and Scientolgy not only justified BUT necessary and why a lot of other phenomena and behavior in Scientology exist.Both Jon Atack and Arnie Lerma introduced me to ideas that I feel are part of this answer .




Hub used a method that is quite ingenious and VERY hard to overcome if not thoroughly understood . He understood hypnosis and confusion as a method of lowering the critical factor in victims quite well - like few others who have lived in my opinion .There is a way to describe this that takes a little imagination on the part of the audience .

First imagine a mind is like a person traveling . The person GOES somewhere :this will be equivalent to directing attention on a subject or theme or concept .This is like a person reading or listening to a tape Hub made.They direct their attention and mind onto SOMETHING .
Now normally this is like walking along and you can see what you see .
This is like just reading or listening NORMALLY.

Now , Hub found out a way to covertly CHANGE this . It is like if you walk along - knowing what is going on - and someone shines a light in your eyes . It stops you seeing ONLY exactly in the area the light is coming from . You can still look almost anywhere and compensate and know that the light is a light and where it is coming from .Okay , not too bad .

But let us say you are surrounded by DOZENS of lights in a CIRCLE carefully spaced to all be close and form a complete unbroken circle COMPLETELY blinding and disorienting you.You can be overwhelmed and dizzy and anxious and disoriented and fall over .This is similar physically to a mental effect that is ROUTINELY created and maintained in Scientology.

There is something Jon Atack told me of that he has an upcoming Bunker article on called the double bind .

I heard of it MANY years ago but did not understand the full implications until I read his e-mail .

I will include a description of the double bind from Wikipedia :

A double bind is an emotionally distressing communication in which an individual (or group) receives two or more conflicting messages, and one message negates the other. This creates a situation in which a successful response to one message results in a failed response to the other (and vice versa), so that the person will automatically be wrong regardless of response. The double bind occurs when the person cannot confront the inherent dilemma, and therefore can neither resolve it nor opt out of the situation.


Double bind theory was first described by Gregory Bateson and his colleagues in the 1950s.

Double binds are often utilized as a form of control without open coercion—the use of confusion makes them both difficult to respond to as well as to resist. I also have to recognize Arnie Lerma discussing a lot about hypnosis and persuasion and showing me the Reversive Blockade from Political Ponerology .


The Reversive Blockade

Reversive blockade: Emphatically insisting upon something which is the opposite of truth blocks the average person's mind from perceiving the truth. In accordance with the dictates of healthy common sense, he starts searching for meaning in the "golden mean" between the truth and its opposite, winding up with some satisfactory counterfeit. People who think like this do not realize that this effect is precisely the intent of the person who subjects them to this method... Use of this method can be included within the [previously] mentioned special psychological knowledge developed by psychopaths concerning the weaknesses of human nature and the art of leading others into error.

Now , these ideas clearly show a concept that by giving TWO contradictory ideas on something it can confuse and misdirect a person .

Okay that seems simple . If someone says Joe is a liar and Joe say he is not you can be unsure what is true . Simple .And the double bind expands on this to include more description and more than two pieces of info being possibly involved.

Okay , now what Hub figured out was that if regarding an idea or subject he got your trust and gave you many many SLIGHTLY conflicting and contradictory pieces of info that cover many possible ways the subject could be or could not be including clearly contradictory ones and sensible seeming or even partly true or the truth twisted or even true info to cover ALL his bases and every angle of thought on the subject or concept being covered it creates a special effect .

It confuses you on the subject of the communication and shuts down your independent and critical thought on it as regarding the subject you are not sure if you are coming or going .Now when I say subject it could be as big as life or survival or Scientology or as small as a word or single idea on anything . The important thing is that your attention is directed to it and Hub gives the varying and contradictory info regarding SOMETHING .

The effect is like the idea gets surrounded by so many interpretations or evaluations or contrary definitions or concepts you cannot make head or tail of it.It is like the person surrounded by blinding light in every possible direction who cannot even get oriented.

This is a method I call a circle of lies .It is more exact and precise than a double bind or Reversive Blockade. It is also in my mind more effective - by a lot. The circle offers one way out - to submit to Hub and do what HE says and not worry about the complexity and confusion you leave behind ( or so you think ) These confusions serve to make you incapable of critical and independent thought on the area or concept they cover AND to make you MORE suggestible in general for Hub .This is part of why the single source myth HAD to be pushed !

If you knew the info came from different people you could keep them as" he said this part " and " she said this other thing " etc. and try to pick who to trust etc. and retain and use independent and critical thought . With ONE source all info is from an equally trusted person ! Hub ! Hub uses the lie that you get greater and greater simplicity as you find the underlying truth .

In reality you get more and more compliant with simple basic ideas in Scientology as your mind declines and you cannot do complex thought and have submitted to Hub more and more.

I saw a presentation by a professor on critical thinking in which he used this quote from H. L. Mencken :"For every complex problem there is a solution that is concise, clear, simple, and wrong." - H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956), American Journalist, Essayist, and Editor 

The professor went on to explain in great detail how thinking and communication needs to have clarity precision , relevance , and accuracy to be useful .And an examination and understanding that may require depth . NOT SIMPLICITY . I think it can greatly benefit a Scientologist or ex to make a little log of the contradictions and confusions they have and can remember . I do not want anyone studying NEW info -just reviewing what already is in their mind and was hard to think about or question or most of all what SEEMS to be settled and a dead issue you are SURE is not worth looking at . You would benefit from getting together and - civilly- going " hey , here he says this about blah blah and here he says this and they do not quite fit or they really seem to be opposites ! " etc.

The I never quite got its are a great place to start - they point at contradictions NOT Mus ! The Mu is just a cover story and misdirection ( and actual application of this principle ) to lead you astray ! Now to be perfectly clear the method relies on a combination of pieces of info on a theme that are spread far apart to prevent detection .

Often in Scientology info on a theme is spread over many courses and years and years CHECK .These pieces must follow certain rules to be most effective .They must be with some of them very slightly almost imperceptibly in disagreement to cover in their totality almost all possible plausible views on the theme . CHECK .Now some must be clearly incompatible and not logically able to not contradict each other so contradiction MUST clearly exist. CHECK.

Next a special piece that explains a lot in Scientology to me and is so subtle as to be lost to many . They must include true or as close to true info as Hub dare risk showing to knock out the possibility of the true info being "untouched " and still within the realm of ideas not buried in the confusion - this method requires "showing "the truth to confuse a mind on it and HIDE it and render it neutralized !

THIS is why the Anderson report and many other studies and judgements say Hub uses just enough truth to confuse with his pack of lies ! The truth makes the lies about the same subject IMPOSSIBLE to detect as it all becomes a confused mess !

This is similar to a method of PR that I heard of socially .Say a celebrity wants to hide that they were at a party on a certain day but the press already has the story ! What to do ? Certain people know to FLOOD the press with many contradictory plausible stories that occur on that day from many sources to utterly confuse the public who go " huh ? I do not care that much anyway " and the result is confusion and rejection of FUTURE rumors on that celeb !

Our minds learn to reject thinking on what we learn that ( even subconsciously ) we CANNOT COMPREHEND ! Now thinking is not the same as obeying Hub and following the closely taped path HE left for us !
The path IS to blind unthinking SLAVERY ! In fact ! I will now give ONE example to start this off of a subject Hub gave the contradictory info on with POSSIBLE sprinkles of truth to confuse you and make thinking on this IMPOSSIBLE .

In his second article, Hubbard said of hypnotism "On some people it works. On most it doesn't. On those on whom it works it sometimes achieves good results, sometimes bad(EoS, p.22; see also DMSMH, p.56). However, in a manuscript supposedly written prior to this article, Hubbard said "Hypnotism as such does not work” (OT, p.69; see also SOSI, p.161). from Never Believe a Hypnotist JA

Hypnotism "reduces self-determinism by interposing the commands of another below the analytical level of an individual's mind ... It is the sort of control mechanism in which an authoritarian individual, cult, or ideology delight. People who indulge in hypnotism may, only very occasionally, be interested in experimentation upon the human mind ... Genuine experimental hypnotism, strictly in the laboratory and never in the parlour, and done wholly in the knowledge that one is reducing the efficiency of the human being on whom one is experimenting and may do him permanent damage, and the use of hypnotism by a surgeon ... should end the extension of hypnotism into the society. Submission to being hypnotized is analagous to being raped, with the exception that the individual can, generally, recover from being raped. To any clear-thinking human who believes in the value of people as human beings, there is something gruesomely obscene about hypnotism. The interjection of unseen controls below the level of consciousness cannot benefit but can only pervert the mind ... The individual who would permit himself to be hypnotized is, frankly, a fool ... It was thought by hypnotists that the mere remembering of ... suggestions would relieve them, and that the power of the suggestion died out with time. These two ideas do not happen to be true” (SOSII, p.220f; see also pp.225f). JA

Hubbard classified the hypnotist as having a permanent emotional condition ranging from apathy, through grief, sympathy or fear to rage, indeed, of being without positive emotions (SOSI, p.161; what this says about Hubbard himself - a hypnotist for many years - we are left to speculate). Having vouched for the power of hypnotism, Hubbard dismissed the hypnotist as a "charlatan” (DOT, p.87). He said, "One of the chief weapons of the pervert is hypnotism” (R&D1, p.332; see also p.270), and "about half-a-percent of all cases run have had pervert hypnotism in the [memory] bank” (R&D1, p.24). In contradiction to these statements is the following "an individual in an hypnotic trance will rarely perform an immoral act even though commanded to do so by the hypnotist, unless that individual would normally perform such acts.” (SOSI, pp.223f). This statement was first published in June 1951. More than a year before, Hubbard had said "Perverts quite commonly use [hypnotism] despite the fact that the moral nature is supposed to rise in a hypnotized subject” (DMSMH, p.384).JA

Although Hubbard was adamant that "Hypnosis is not sleep, it is another mechanism” (R&D 1, p.182), he also asserted that "The hypnotist has 'success' where he does because he is able, by talking to people about 'sleep', to put into restimulation some engram which contains the word sleep and shut-down analytical power.” (DMSMH, p.75; see also R&D1, p.8 & R&D3, p.241). While Hubbard asserted that most people cannot be hypnotized, he also said: "The person who does not have 'Go back to sleep' in his [engram] bank someplace is a rare one and should be put in a museum, because he is a strange creature.” (R&D1, p.330). Having said all of this, Hubbard recommended the use of the phrase "go to sleep” in Dianetic auditing, as a phrase to be repeated by the patient (or "preclear”) (R&D3, p.156). JA

Hubbard made various assertions about suggestion: "positive suggestion means in hypnosis a suggestion which is given to a hypnotized subject which will result in some change in the manifestations and actions of that patient” (R&D 1, p.48); "It is a suggestion by the operator to a hypnotized subject with the sole end of creating a changed mental condition in the subject by implantation of the suggestion alone. It is a transplantation of something in the hypnotist's mind into the patient's mind. The patient is then to believe it and take it as part of himself.” (R&D 1, p.237; see also R&D 1, p.33); "Shut down the person's analyzer [the 'analytical mind' of dianetic hypnosis] and what follows goes in as positive suggestion just as though he were hypnotized. He cannot reason on this data, he can only react, and he reacts as dictated by the engram.” (R&D 3, p.244). Hypnotic suggestion is very powerful: "No matter how foolish a suggestion is given to a subject under hypnosis, he will carry it out one way or another ... Any suggestion will operate within his mind unbeknownst to his higher levels of awareness. Very complex suggestions can be given” (DMSMH, p.56). Hubbard went on to say that neuroses, psychoses, compulsions and repressions can all be perfectly imitated through positive suggestion. Hubbard assured his followers, "We never give positive suggestions” (R&D 1, p.48). JA

According to Hubbard, trance states are common, and can even be induced through the normal procedures of education: "In altitude teaching, somebody is a 'great authority.' He is probably teaching some subject that is far more complex than it should be. He has become defensive down through the years, and this is a sort of protective coating that he puts up, along with the idea that the subject will always be a little better known by him than by anybody else and that there are things to know in this subject which he really wouldn't let anybody else in on. This is altitude instruction.” As an aside, it is worth mentioning that Hubbard was later to assert that every major tenet in Scientology and Dianetics was his exclusive discovery (see HCOPL "Keeping Scientology Working”, February 1965). Hubbard continued, "And in order to get people to sit very alertly and do exactly what he says, he has another trick: he gives them examinations ... So there is this anxiety around a person's grades, and this comes forward until he finally gets up to a point in education where when somebody says the word examination to him it not only push-buttons him but it also threatens Mama, Papa, love and general survival. It is a terrific whip. It keeps people in a state of confusion, and when their minds are slightly confused they are in a hypnotic trance. Any time anybody gets enough altitude he can be called a hypnotic operator, and what he says will act as hypnotic suggestion. Hypnotism is a difference in levels of altitude. There are ways to create and lower the altitude of the subject, but if the operator can heighten his own altitude with regard to the subject the same way, he doesn't have to put the subject to sleep. What he says will still react as hypnotic suggestion.” (R&D 4, p.324; see also R&D 3, pp. 246 & 248). This is a point which should be considered long and hard by anyone who has been involved with Dianetics or Scientology.JA

Hubbard also gave advice on avoiding this induction of trance: "In learning, study what you want to know, think what you want to think about it, recognize institutionalism for the bogus straw man it is, and keep the analyzer whirring.” (R&D 3, p.247). This strongly suggests that we should forget "standard tech” or a "bridge”, taking only what is useful (if anything). JA


Although the Dianetic practitioner, or auditor, can "push button” responses in others, "Short of the use of drugs as in narco-synthesis, hypnotism or surgery, no mistake can be made by the auditor which cannot be remedied either by himself or by another auditor” (DMSMH, p.165).Auditor altitude:

The auditor should adopt "an air of detached efficiency toward the patient ... In short, teach yourself some altitude ... Exude self-confidence” (R&D 1, p.185). Of course, within Hubbard's own teaching, achieving "altitude” is equivalent to becoming a "hypnotic operator”: "he doesn't have to put the subject to sleep. What he says will still react as hypnotic suggestion.” (R&D 4, p.324). As to exuding confidence, Hubbard recommended a text to his followers, which gives this advice "you must have absolute confidence in yourself. You must know that you will succeed. This is the first requisite to success in this Science.” However, in this case, the Science was not Dianetics but hypnotism (Twenty-Five Lessons in Hypnotism, L.E.Young; recommended by Hubbard, R&D 1, p.307; R&D2, p.12. This is one of the most garish works the present author has ever seen). JA

Hubbard was ambiguous about suggestion: "We never give positive suggestions” (R&D1, p.48); but "you are putting in positive suggestion whether you want to or not, no matter how careful you are” (R&D1, p.336). However, "chatter doesn't do much harm unless the patient is hypnotized.” (R&D1, p.48); however, "When an auditor finds his preclear unusually suggestive [sic], he should be very careful what he says” (SOS, p.227). Although Hubbard asserted that hypnotism can be very dangerous, and that preclears can readily go into trance during auditing, he insisted that Dianetics can cause no harm: "Short of the use of drugs as in narco-synthesis, hypnotism or surgery, no mistake can be made by the auditor which cannot be remedied either by himself or by another auditor” (DMSMH, p.165); "The pre-clear can in no way be damaged by dianetic technique.” (DMSMH, p.413); "The mind is a self-protecting mechanism” (DMSMH, p.165 - this being so, why are engrams dangerous?). The way you do this is very simple. When the person advances an argument against your decision, you never confront his argument but confront the premise on which his argument is based. That is the rule. He says, "But my professor always said that water boiled at 212 degrees."

You say, "Your professor of what?"

"My professor of physics."

"What school? How did he know?" Completely off track! You're no longer arguing about whether or not water boils at 212 degrees, but you're arguing about professors. And he will become very annoyed, but he won't know quite what he is annoyed about. You can do this so adroitly and so artfully that you can actually produce a confusion of the depth of hypnosis. The person simply goes down tone scale to a point where they're not sure of their own name.

And at that point you say, "Now, you do agree to go out and draw the water out of the well, don't you?"

"Yes-anything!" And he'll go out and draw the water out of the well.

One error, however, must be remarked upon. The examination system employed is not much different from a certain hypnotic technique. One induces a state of confusion in the subject by raising his anxieties of what may happen if he does not pass. One then "teaches" at a mind which is anxious and confused. That mind does not then rationalize, it merely records and makes a pattern. If the pattern is sufficiently strong to be regurgitated verbatim on an examination paper, the student is then given a good grade and passed.

All these quotes are but a small sample of the many , many contradictory incompatible statements regarding ONE and ONLY one theme HYPNOTISM

It is one of the VERY MOST important to destroy the ability to think of and about for Scientologists and Dianeticists for Hub ! Why ? Because even a cursory independent and critical comparison will often lead almost anyone ( with an uncompromised mind ) to conclude that Dianetics and Virtually everything people do in Scientology is a form or derivative of hypnosis and as such is VERY dangerous if used covertly and without extensive explanation of transference , dissociation and the vivid and FALSE nature of events imagined while under hypnosis and the euphoric trances one may enter !

See , he says one thing then the opposite then another and another and you often can not make head or tail of what to think and just go along with - Scientology is not hypnotism SO I DO NOT NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT !! That was Hub's intention ALL ALONG !

He may have started out as an instinctive pathological liar and combined study of hypnosis and stumbled into this technique . But here is the kicker -he lied SO much about the mind and suggestibility and logic that he knocked out the EXACT subjects needed to detect what he did AND dig out of it !

THIS in my mind is a very big part of why so few ever pursue recovery !They are utterly confused about what to recover from and how to even start ! I got lucky and followed a trail to see that there is something wrong with obvious lack of expansion ( something I could SEE )

Then utterly confused LOOKED at DM and crew ( Still loyal to Hub )

Then realized after consideration of evidence from the cult and critcs - DM and the SO are NOT OTs - not even kind of or a little !

Then I quickly realized the only possible answer was IT IS AND ALWAYS WAS ALL LIES!!!

See , I had my long dormant psycho pathological liar sense come back on ALL THE WAY !! I was fortunate to on an emotional level KNOW FOR SURE to NEVER believe ANYTHING Hub said !

Until someone -in their own mind -gets there you have to some degree a victim of Hub's CONTROL . The hunting for " good " parts or " he said this that is true , so he TRIED to help sometimes ! " etc. etc. are signs the person is DESPERATELY trying to remedy the confusion as Hub implanted them to over and over - submit to his authority !

See , there are exes and indies and freezoners who KNOW he lied and was a scumbag but still give him altitude to say " well he made auditing and I can get gains from it or I enjoyed it so it is good " ! Look , I can "feel good " on meth or heroin and if I have false info I might think they are good for me !
I want to focus on this idea of the circle of lies as a topic and thoroughly cover it as it is complicated and one of the most important to understand .

I will be working on this for a while and have a sequel that expands on this and integrates it with...BUT first we should really get this before I move on .

It is a very exact idea of a method of shutting down and keeping shut down independent and critical thinking on a topic , subject , theme or concept by a precise method.

This consist of giving info from a trusted source that is specific , covers many very slightly differing ideas and some that must be direct contradictions that cannot be reasonably resolved.

This has the need to if possible include - without getting found out or rejected - the truth or a seemingly true idea or a twisted or altered version of such . the closer to real the better for hiding the real truth .

It needs lots of pieces of info to cover your bases and they need to be spread out very far if possible in time to hide the obvious incongruity .If they are not spread out you resist a person SEEING the contradiction and coordinating the info and REJECTING the source of the info utterly ! Fortunately ( for Hub )in Scientology a person has thousands of pieces of info often spread over a lifetime that he gives them !

When you get them is not important - as long as they get into your mind while Hub has altitude ! They can come over decades and do their job !

That they fit the model of being about a theme , covering the theme from all the angles ( i.e. including as many reasonable ways to look at it with slight subtle degrees of difference and their opposites , having slight and great contradiction ), having seemingly agreeable ideas about the theme in some of the statements , having lots of other info and time to space them out and prevent CONSCIOUS pattern recognition and being reinforced by OTHER cult methods and doctrine to normalize the avoidance of looking at them and encourage submission to Hub and his methods to resolve confusion .

Plainly you get too much info that does not add up and leaves no room to even consider it wrong - as it covers variations and opposites of ITSELF in the doctrine ! So no matter what you pick you are not quite right or sure ! THAT is the formula for lasting confusion !

This is not just for hypnosis this covers HUNDREDS of themes and concepts in Scientology ! This is why the desperate cherry picker ( person looking for the " right " ideas in Scientology ) does not win . ALL the ideas are to gain altitude and submission and by acting like there are good ones you are in fact GIVING Hub altitude and submission ! Sorry , for your mental health you should throw out the demonic baby with the poison bathwater !

I hope this is clear . If it is not I will keep on restating it and giving examples of groups of - not just contradictory info but covering all his bases and all the angles info -as that is what this method requires and neutralizes in the victim ! It is best at this point to even get a little notebook and write a concept in Scientology like regret or ethics or love or hope or the goodness of man and from your own mind or if you need to your materials - find the statements and SEE how they form the circle around the theme .

He does this with HUNDREDS of things ! This is why he knew if he could just get people to listen he would get SOME of them !  The technique is CUMULATIVE ! It builds in force with continued and repeated application .

It breaks down resistance - sometimes slowly , sometimes quickly ON those it works on . I hope this helps and want to really expand on it .

All right , I will now attempt to begin showing groups of statements in Dianetics and Scientology that are part of the pattern of a circle of lies and YOU can probably think of and write up many many more and post them and have discussions .

THAT will require YOUR critical thinking and be far more beneficial than just reading what I write.You can post threads on ESMB and work through this for yourself.

I should caution you that I have found forcing myself to critically examine these issues WITH independent critical thought has for me resulted in mental discomfort and stress.
I believe this is due to using aptitudes that were literally retarded for decades by the mind control in Scientology. It has gotten easier over months but I would be lying if I said it will be pleasant or easy for anyone .

I recommend that if it happens to learn about trauma PTSD , take frequent breaks and realize you are taking on buried cognitive dissonance and restructuring DIRECTLY !
YOU are fighting for your own freedom and sanity . Unpleasant emotions feelings and memories can surface.I am not trained as a psychologist or therapist and can not pretend to be .I can only say this is what has helped me and it has gotten much , much easier VERY rapidly.Okay , now for some other contradictions in Scientology.

Let us start with some relatively easy ones : Hub uses differing terms and ideas to describe a sleepy condition and what causes it .


1. an abbreviation of analytical attenuation meaning diminution or weakening of the analytical awareness of an individual for a brief or extensive period of time. If sufficiently great, it can result in unconsciousness. (It stems from the restimulation of an engram which contains pain and unconsciousness.) - Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary.
2. simply a drop in ARC to an extreme. (Scn AD) (PAB 70) 3. the physiological by-product of unconsciousness. (SOS, Bk. 2, p. 170) 4. dope-off. (Ability 52) (dope-off is also defined...basically means "sleepy, foggy (as though doped)."


BOIL-OFF,
v. to become groggy and seem to go to sleep. (HFP, p. 100)—n. 1.usually a flow running too long in one direction. (7204C07 SO III)
2.a manifestation of unconsciousness, is very mild, and simply means that some period of the person’s life wherein he was unconscious has been slightly
restimulated. (Scn Jour ISS. 14-G)
3.a state of unconsciousness produced by a confusion of effort impinging upon one area. It is a slow motion unconsciousness. (PDC 29)
4.a condition of somnolence which is sometimes indistinguishable from sleep. (SOS, Bk. 2, p. 133)
5.boil-off was originally and sedately named “comatic reduction,” but such erudition has been outvoted by the fact that it has never been used. (DMSMH, p. 303)
6.it actually is a flow which is run too long in one direction. That’s what boil-off, anaten, etc. is.
(SH Spec 229, 6301C10) ALL from the Tech Dictionary

Now from basic word clearing on Scientology's OWN website we get the quote "
Waiting to become groggy or to “dope off” (feel tired, sleepy or foggy as though doped or drugged) as the only detection of misunderstood words before handling is waiting too long. If you have ever seen a student falling asleep over his book, then you have seen dope-off. Long before that point, someone should have made the student look for a misunderstood word. The time to look for the misunderstood word is as soon as the student slows down or isn’t quite as “bright” as he was fifteen minutes before. It is not a misunderstood phrase or idea or concept but a misunderstood WORD. This always occurs before the subject itself is not understood. "

And nearly every Scientologist is familiar with the concept of " running off unconsciousness " meaning in auditing a person becoming sleepy is seen as a sign they are REMOVING unconsciousness ! So , sometimes being sleepy means - in the insane cult doctrine - you have passed an MU OR you have an " engram restimulated " OR you are successfully " running off unconsciousness " ! The same physical manifestation is relabeled even though it PERFECTLY fits hypnosis and is NEVER treated as hypnosis !

It in a course room equals an MU and requires word clearing and can be an incident in restimulation and requires auditing in an auditors room and ... It just goes on and on . CONFUSING a Scientologist .




From the code of honor on regret point 11 :

11. Never regret yesterday. Life is in you today and you make your tomorrow.

And for the Social Personality we get :

8. The social personality is ashamed of his misdeeds and reluctant to confess them. He takes responsibility for his errors.

And for the Antisocial personality we get :

8. Many antisocial persons will freely confess to the most alarming crimes when forced to do so, but will have no faintest sense of responsibility for them.
Their actions have little or nothing to do with their own volition. Things “just happened.”
They have no sense of correct causation and particularly cannot feel any sense of remorse or shame therefore.

So , to be " honorable " one must NEVER regret but must also be ashamed to be a social personality !

An unresolvable OBVIOUS contradiction !






Now we get to a classic : How " good" are people in Scientology ?


The following is exerpted from L. Ron Hubbard’s article of 1980 entitled, Ethics, Justice and the Dynamics.
“Years ago I discovered and proved that man is basically good. This means that the basic personality and the basic intentions of the individual, toward himself and others, are good.

As there are 80 percent of us trying to get along and only 20 percent trying to prevent us, our lives would be much easier to live were we well informed as to the exact manifestations of such a personality. Thus, we could detect it and save ourselves much failure and heartbreak.

As they only comprise 20 percent of the population and as only 2 1/2 percent are truly dangerous, we see that with a very small amount of effort we could considerably better the state of society. The above two quotes are from the article entitled The Antisocial Personality which is in many forms in Scientology and studied on many courses.

A degraded being is not a suppressive as he can have case gain. But he is so PTS that he works for suppressives only. Degraded beings, taking a cue from SP associates, instinctively resent, hate and seek to obstruct any person in charge of anything or any Big Being.Anyone issuing sensible orders is the first one resented by a degraded being.

A degraded being lies to his seniors, avoids orders covertly by alter-is, fails to comply, supplies only complex ideas that can’t ever work (obstructive) and is a general area of enturbulence, often mild seeming or even “cooperative,” often even flattering, sometimes merely dull, but consistently alter-ising or noncomplying.

Some thetans are bigger than others. None are truly equal. But the degraded being is not necessarily a natively bad thetan.

Degraded beings are about eighteen to one over Big Beings in the human race (minimum ratio). So those who keep things going are few.

All of the above are from the HCOPL Alter-is and the degraded being .

Also when in the SO you are trained that ex SO are Degraded Beings as one of the very first things you learn and have pounded home hard .

In recruitment materials you are convinced that this IS the most elite goup on earth .

I have seen promo that says for every Sea Org member making it go right there are a million people who do not even know what right is !

By actual record the percentages are about twenty to 100,000 that a group of human beings will dream up bad technology to destroy good technology.

Hubbard defined "wog" as: "1. worthy Oriental gentleman. This means a common run-of-the-mill garden-variety humanoid. [Saint Hill Special
Briefing Course tape 82, catalog #6611C29, entitled "Clear and OT Defined"] 2. a wog is somebody who isn't even trying." [Saint Hill Special Briefing Course tape 73, catalog #6608C02, entitled "Suppressives and GAEs"]

So , we rapidly get A LOT of differing irreconcilable ideas on the " goodness" of man and that SOME are good some are " not natively bad " or not and that some are quite quite elite !

Now , wait - first man is basically good - this means ALL without qualification ! THEN you get the 2 and 1/2 % rule and the 20% RULE THEN you get the big beings and degraded beings being eighteen to one THEN you get the wogs as NOT EVEN TRYING in life !Then you keep moving up to the SO being the elite and the only ones who even know what RIGHT IS !

See , these are irreconcilable and at times SLIGHT differences that take you from ALL men ( and hopefully women ) being basically good to ALMOST NONE EVER !
There are many many more parts of the doctrine that build THIS idea and as I said you could be well served to write them from YOUR perspective as I am not you and you have done the courses and had the experiences you have .

You can do ( as I tried to for decades ) mental gymnastics with farfetched ideas to make these NOT contradict but they ultimately DO .This idea could be the " are people good , and if so which ones or all ? " family of CONTRADICTIONS .

You could call closely related groups of info cousins in this model .I hope this helps get the ball rolling on this .

Now , for some on freedom .

Okay , these are OBVIOUS contradictions and to many out giant red flags !





Well , how about something less esoteric and metaphorical than spiritual freedom .

Sex and family !

Almost all of us have sex at some point in our lives and want answers on this to guide us.



So , let's start with some quotes from the way to happiness :

Sex is the means by which the race projects itself into the future through children and the family. A lot of pleasure and happiness can come from sex: nature intended it that way so the race would go on.

Sex is a big step on the way to happiness and joy. There is nothing wrong with it if it is followed with faithfulness and decency.


A child factually does not do well without love. Most children have an abundance of it to return. The way to happiness has on its route the loving and
the helping of children from babyhood to the brink of adult life. End quote .

Hmm not too bad .

From Scientology's OWN website we get the very familiar :

L. Ron Hubbard defined the Second Dynamic like this:
"The second dynamic is the urge toward existence as a sexual activity. This dynamic actually has two divisions. Second dynamic (a) is the sexual act itself and the second dynamic (b) is the family unit including the rearing of children. This can be called the sex dynamic

Hmm okay , this SEEMS kosher so far...


This is an excerpt from a taped conversation with L Ron Hubbard in 1974 and his quotes affected very strongly. “The GE is a family man; the GE is lost without a family. It’s very strange, but Homo sap i.e. a family unit. The GE is built on that basis. It’s fascinating, fascinating. It’s not important to know it but a lot of your urges toward families and so forth are not thetan urges at all, they’re the GE. The GE can’t survive at all without a family unit. He’s just as dead as a mackerel if he isn’t a family unit, whereas your thetan is just dead as a mackerel if he gets too mixed up in family units.


You can’t talk to GEs; they’re kind of psycho. And by the way, you can fall into this dreadful trap with a GE. You see, he uses the MEST universe with which to build. He’s gotten very, very bad off and he has to use MEST materials all the time.


So, you get this situation here with the GE, and your GE is busy: build, build, build, build, and build. And, of course he’s got to have a family to build with.


You get this terrific family thirst. And you get your GE surviving best and being loused up the most because of inter-family relationships. And your thetan, by the way, can much more easily go into a group. Families are not good groups; they’re bad groups.”




GE is the Genetic Entity. The Scientology Tech Dictionary defines it this way: 1. That beingness not dissimilar to the thetan which has carried forward and developed the body from its earliest moments along the evolutionary line on earth and which, through experience, necessity and natural selection, has employed the counter-efforts of the environment to fashion an organism of the type best fitted for survival, limited only by the abilities of the genetic entity.The goal of the genetic entity is survival on a much grosser plane of materiality.

2. Formerly referred to as the somatic mind. It has no real personality; it is not the “I” of the body. This is the “mind” of an animal, a dog or a cat or a cow.

3. That entity which is carried along through time, that is making the body through the time stream, through the action of sex and so forth.



UH , wait a minute - at first sex and family are totally cool and NOW they are part of something ...





Quotes from HCO BULLETIN OF 26 AUGUST 1982 PAIN AND SEX :

There are two items in this universe that cause more trouble than many others combined.
One is PAIN.The other is SEX. One should know more about these things. They may have applications but they are used by destructive beings in great volume to cave others in.


Despite the false data of Freud, psychologists, psychiatrists and other criminals, they are not native to a being. They are only artificial wavelengths. They have exact frequencies that can be manufactured. A being or a machine can synthesize either one.


Pain becomes a lock on a being's abhorrence for misalignment of his own electrical flows. It is a lock upon unconsciousness which shuts off knowingness.


Sex is a lock on and perversion of the "joy of creation" which involves a whole being and expands him, but by using just one wavelength, sex, this can be perverted and he contracts.


When pain enters a scene, a being withdraws, contracts and can go unconscious. When sex enters the scene, a being fixates and loses power.


Destructive creatures who do not want people big or reaching -- since they are terrified of punishment due to their crimes -- invented pain and sex to shrink people and cut their alertness, knowingness, power and reach.


Thus, you see people who are "experiencing" either pain or sex introverting and not producing much Pain and sex were the INVENTED tools of degradation.

People do the most irrational things when overcharged with sex, and prostitutes use it as a knowing stock-in-trade. Combined, pain and sex make up the insane Jack-the-Rippers (who killed only prostitutes) and the whole strange body of sex-murder freaks, including Hinckley*, and the devotees of late-night horror movies. END quote





WAIT a minute !!! Sex and family went from being natural and a part of the way to happiness to TOTALLY MESSED  UP !!!

This is DEFINITELY a huge contradiction !!!

Okay now let us look at religious tolerance :

The Creed of the Church states that “all men have inalienable rights to their own religious practices and their performance.”

And from the Way to Happiness:

• “Respect the religious beliefs of others.”
• “Tolerance is a good cornerstone on which to build human relationships.”
• “When one views the slaughter and suffering caused by religious intolerance down all the history of Man and into modern times, one can see that intolerance is a very non-survival activity.”
• “Religious tolerance does not mean one cannot express his own beliefs. It does mean that seeking to undermine or attack the religious faith and beliefs of another has always been a short road to trouble.”
• “The way to happiness can become contentious when one fails to respect the religious beliefs of others.”
  
  “When religion is not influential in a society or has ceased to be, the state inherits the entire burden of public morality, crime and intolerance. It then must use punishment and police. Yet this is unsuccessful as morality, integrity and self-respect not already inherent in the individual, cannot be enforced with any great success. Only by a spiritual awareness and inculcation of the spiritual value of these attributes can they come about. There must be more reason and more emotional motivation to be moral, etc., than threat of human discipline.”
  
  From an edition of What is Scientology ? the following quotes :
  
  
  "In Scientology there is no attempt to change a person's beliefs or to persuade him away from any religion to which he already belongs." "Scientology is all-denominational in that it opens its membership to people of all faiths."
  "Membership in Scientology does not mean that there is any necessity to leave your current church, synagogue, temple or mosque."
  "Scientology respects all religions. Scientology does not conflict with other religions or other religious practices"
  
  In PAB 31 Hubbard writes: "Religion does much to keep the assumption in restimulation, being basically a control mechanism used by those who have sent the preclear into a body. You will find the cross as a symbol all over the universe, and the Christ legend as implant in preclears a million years ago."
  
  "A few operating thetans -scarcity- could lead to trouble. Witness the chaos resulting from the activities and other determinism technology of one operating thetan, 2,000 years ago. It is despicable and utterly beneath contempt to tell a man he must repent, that he is evil. Those who talk most about peace on earth and good-will among men themselves carry forward the seas of unrest, war and chaos."
  
  In Certainty magazine, Vol.5, No. 10, he writes of his achievements as the Buddha, and positions himself as a contender with Jesus Christ.
  
  
  

  "Two and a half thousand years ago a handful of clears civilized half a billion people. What if we were all clear. Neither Lord Buddha nor Jesus Christ were OT's according to the evidence. They were just a shade above clear."

  In HCO bulletin of 18 July 1959 Hubbard wrote as a "Historical Note",
  
  

  "The whole Christian movement is based on the victim. Compulsion of the overt-motivator sequence. They won by appealing to victims. We can win by converting victims. Christianity succeeded by making people into victims. We can succeed by making victims into people."
  
  In HCO bulletin 21 Jan 1960 he writes,
  
  

  "Some Churches used a mechanism of confession. This was a limited effort to relieve a person of the pressure of his overt acts. Later the mechanism of confession was employed as a kind of blackmail by which increased contribution could be obtained from the person confessing."
  
  Later Hub goes on :" For a long while, some people have been cross with me for my lack of co-operation in believing in a Christian Heaven, God and Christ. I have never said I didn't disbelieve in a Big Thetan but there was certainly something very corny about Heaven et al. Now I have to apologize. There was a Heaven. Not too unlike, in cruel betrayal, the heaven of the Assassins in the 12th Century who, like everyone else, dramatized the whole track implants - if a bit more so. The symbol of the crucified Christ is very apt indeed. It's the symbol of a thetan betrayed."
  
  

  "The gates of the first series are well done, well built. An avenue of statues of saints leads up to them. The gate pillars are surmounted by marble angels. The entering grounds are very well kept, laid out like Bush Gardens in Pasadena, so often seen in the movies. Aside from the implant boxes which lie across from each other on the walk there are other noises and sounds as though the saints are defending and berating."

  "The second series, probably in the same place, shows what a trillion years of overt acts does (or is an additional trick to collapse one's time). The place is shabby. The vegetation is gone. The pillars are scruffy. The saints have vanished. So have the angels. A sign on one (the left as you enter) says `This is Heaven'. The right has a sign "Hell" with an arrow and inside the grounds one can see the excavations like archaeological diggings with the raw terraces, that lead to "Hell". Plain wire fencing encloses the place. There is a sentry box beside and outside the right pillar. The roadway `leading up' to the gates is deeply eroded. An effigy of Joseph, complete with desert clothing is seen approaching the gates (but not moving) leading a donkey which `carries' the original Madonna and child from `Bethlehem'. The implanting boxes lie on either side of this `entering' path at path level."

  Hubbard concluded:
  
  

  "Further, we have our hands on an appalling bit of technology where the world is concerned. With rapidity and a Meter it can be shown that Heaven is a false dream and that the old religion was based on very painful lie, cynical betrayal."
  
  In tape #10 recorded at the first Class VIII course on the ship Apollo, October 3, 1968, Hubbard says:
  

  "Somebody somewhere on this planet, back about 600 BC found some pieces of R6, and I don't know how they found it, either by watching madman or something. But since that time they have used it and it became what is known as Christianity. The man on the cross. There was no Christ. But the man on the cross is shown as Everyman."
  
  An alleged copy of OT VIII was filed as court exhibit in the Fishman case. Therein he writes:"for those of you whose Christian toes I may have stepped on, let me take the opportunity to disabuse you of some lovely myths. For instance, the historic Jesus was not nearly the sainted figure he has been made out to be. In addition to being a lover of young boys and men, he was given to uncontrollable bursts of temper and hatred that belied the general message of love, understanding and other typical Marcab PR. You have only to look at the history his teachings have inspired to see where it all inevitably leads. It is historic fact and yet man still clings to the ideal, so deep and insidious is the biological implanting."
  
  Now the OT VIII material is - to my knowledge - the only part of this Hub or the cult EVER disputed out of ALL this !!!
  
  So whether you include that or not ( and while I do not have absolute proof of authenticity I LEAN toward believing it )
  
  This is still an unresolvable contradictory mess !
  
  Is Scientology compatible with other religions ? You get the answer yes and no in different spots !
  
  What is Hub's view on Christ - sometimes he lived , sometimes he was part of implants,  sometimes a lover of young boys WTF !?
  
  Look this is meant to UTTERLY confuse !!!
  
  I see no other explanation as even remotely plausible and as I continue to learn more about hypnosis , critical thinking , cognitive dissonance and undue influence I see no other way it could be !
