Obstacles for "Intellectuals"

I think that in the world of cult critics and people who read and comment on these topics some obstacles come up that you often have to find for yourself the hard way.



It is human nature to fall into some traps, at least for some people in some situations, in my opinion. Maybe it is a combination of personality, how one was raised, and the culture around you along with the results of your own choices, and possible other factors.



There are some maxims that hint at it but I think you need to be on the lookout for them and further you need to realize "hey, this applies to ME PERSONALLY FOR REAL ! And not just people I think of as arrogant assholes ! WOW !"



In leaving Scientology I ran into some of the clues, but some things take a lot of repetition and variation to sink in, because of a variety of reasons. I was looking hard at how ideas applied or didn't apply to Hubbard, Scientology and Scientologists when I looked at a lot of material and not at how it would apply in a past Scientology life or another situation with no support of any mass movement.



Additionally, we have biases that make it easy to see how these ideas apply to other people and groups but to think they don't apply to me for some odd reason or another.



I think that if we force ourselves to look at what has been said about intellectuals some things keep coming up. And whether you get a degree or three or are self taught (autodidact) and just find your own way it applies to lots of people. If you think you know something that most people don't and they and society would benefit from people knowing your knowledge then that is enough to be an intellectual for the purposes of this post.



I think that many ex cult members and cult watchers have this quality, we feel like we have knowledge that most people don't and could benefit from.

You read these words and get the impression that intellectual life brings a temptation to be an aristocrat and elitist who sees himself or herself as a cut above everybody else. If we say "through my hard work I am a cut above everybody else and have essential knowledge they lack", that is very likely to produce arrogance and contempt. It won't be a temptation everyone succumbs to, or succumbs to equally or everyone succumbs to in the same way.

But just as some people will be more corrupt if they have more power or wealth or admiration than they would be without these things, so to will some people not be corrupt if given great power, wealth and so on.

How someone can keep from getting arrogant and even disdainful towards others is hard to see. After all, if we "know" our knowledge is superior and important and the problem is that others either don't know our knowledge or agree with us about it, then we can fall into the temptation to see ourselves as a cut above them, as people who should be respected and listened to or even obeyed.

That can be a dangerous delusion in my opinion. I have repeatedly rejected jobs and promotions that include authority over others because I KNOW that I would make terrible mistakes if I had power. I don't want to improperly discipline or penalize or fire people unfairly or let bad employees get away with improper behavior too much. I am afraid that I would do both and that I would make other mistakes too, like being too harsh or inconsiderate sometimes, being too emotional and unfairly angry with people.

I don't like it as the recipient, so I want to limit myself regarding delivering it.

But that doesn't make it any less of a problem in other contexts.

I think we can get an unhealthy attitude to see ourselves as "having the right knowledge, the right answers, if only those uneducated people would figure that out and listen, everything would be fine", I think that attitude pushes self confidence into the stratosphere and promotes not only delusions of grandeur but for some of us unjustified delusions of competence, we just know so little about how our ideas and solutions would work out if actually pursued but can imagine them as flawless works of genius without really knowing our asses from a hole in the ground regarding the reality of application.

This sets someone up to be self-deluded and deeply conceited. And to think "I have this all worked out," to never have to prove it, and to see the failures on our part as proof of the inferiority of others, non-intellectual commoners and the imperfections and failures of other individuals, groups and society as rock solid proof that they are ignorant and inferior. Yikes.

I think it leads to having to find some way of attaining genuine compassion and humility. I just don't know of any other solution. I think being honest about this is the first step, saying this is the challenge and why it exists. But meeting the challenge to be genuinely compassionate and humble ?

Now that is the real question.

On Loaded Language, Cult Terminology

"Loading the Language. The group interprets or uses words and phrases in new ways so that often the outside world does not understand. This jargon consists of thought-terminating cliches, which serve to alter members' thought processes to conform to the group's way of thinking." Robert Jay Lifton


I have read a but about influence and sometimes find it striking how many people of different backgrounds and professions find similar ideas or conclusions. It doesn't mean they are all right or in agreement but to compare and contrast their statements can be worthwhile if you are interested in the topic they have all discussed.


And merely quoting someone doesn't mean they are correct or even a good person. It just means that they produced a quote that is interesting to me in this context.


Like a lot of people who leave Scientology I have benefited from reading about loaded language and found that writers of all different types have something to say.


I put together some quotes from a variety of folks and included some comments of my own as I think it is valuable to both cult recovery and just dealing with life to undergo a loaded language works.

Margaret Singer in her book Cults In Our Midst provides a tremendous amount of essential information regarding cults. I believe it is one of the finest books ever on Scientology and is by one of the greatest cult experts to have ever walked the earth. Margaret Singer has qualifications and experience second to none. I will present several quotes in an extensive analysis. I have none of her academic or professional achievements. I do however have twenty five years experience as a Scientologist to consider. For ease of understanding I will present quotes in blue and my comments in black.

First a quote that struck me instantly. It reminded me of an analysis of Scientology written by a class XII auditor. She said Hubbard's writings can seem contradictory and paradoxical. That is actually intentional.

"The more complicated and filled with contradictions the new system is and the more difficult it is to learn, the more effective the conversion process will be." ( page 67 )Margaret Singer

The contradictions serve to thoroughly confuse Hubbard's victims and help to increase their suggestibility. With hundreds or thousands of contradictions in millions of words of doctrine the effect is compounded by unimaginably immense repetition.

"In cultic groups, the individual member is always wrong, and the system is always right ."( page 68 )Margaret Singer

This is a key component of cults - the individual always must submit to a position as an intellectual subordinate to the group, doctrine or leader. A relationship based on mutual respect and human rights has no place in a cult. The leader is always above any accountability and without humility or compassion. The system is always totalistic and without means of reform and progress. If it lacks these qualities it fails to be cultic.

This is particularly relevant to Scientology as Hubbard used many thousands of new words. Many of which are the opposite of their original meaning or used to state something the exact opposite of the truth to hide Hubbard's intentions and crimes. He used phrases twisted and turned to fool people. Many of his terms lack clear meaning because he uses far too many new terms with reference to one another and multiple contradictory definitions. The amount of terms and definitions to attempt to learn and coordinate is simply overwhelming and often absorbs so much of the cult member's attention that clear understanding and thought are severely inhibited.

As members continue to formulate their ideas in the group's jargon, this language serves the purpose of constricting members' thinking and shutting down critical thinking abilities. At first, translating from their native tongue into "groupspeak" forces members to censor, edit, and slow down spontaneous bursts of criticism or oppositional ideas. " ( page 70)Margaret Singer

Of all cult methods this may be the one Hubbard focused on the most. With his extensive new language drummed into his victims' minds through extreme repetition. The beliefs within the language replace the Scientologists' own. And often nearly entirely replace critical thinking.
Getting almost complete control over cultists' minds is one of the main intentions Hubbard had in his chosen methods.

By continuosly adding new terms and concepts and redefining old ones with explicitly contradictory definitions Hubbard tried to perpetually maintain the overwhelming confusion cult members usually experience when first joining a cult . This is compounded by Scientology's extensive decades long indoctrination process. It keeps the translation process ongoing rather than temporary. This helps to heighten confusion, anxiety and suggestibility.


"One international group, for example, has dictionaries for members to use. In one of these dictionaries, criticism is defined as "justification for having done an overt." Then one looks up overt and the dictionary states: "overt act: an overt act is not just injuring someone or something; an overt act is an act of omission or commission which does the least good for the least number of dynamics or the most harm to the greatest number of dynamics." Ideological Totalism



Loading the Language
The language of the totalist environment is characterized by the thought-terminating cliché. The most far-reaching and complex of human problems are compressed into brief, highly reductive, definitive-sounding phrases, easily memorized and easily expressed. These become the start and finish of any ideological analysis. In [Chinese Communist] thought reform, for instance, the phrase "bourgeois mentality" is used to encompass and critically dismiss ordinarily troublesome concerns like the quest for individual expression, the exploration of alternative ideas, and the search for perspective and balance in political judgments.

And in addition to their function as interpretive shortcuts, these cliches become what Richard Weaver has called "ultimate terms" : either "god terms," representative of ultimate good; or "devil terms," representative of ultimate evil. In [Chinese Communist] thought reform, "progress," "progressive," "liberation," "proletarian standpoints" and "the dialectic of history" fall into the former category; "capitalist," "imperialist," "exploiting classes," and "bourgeois" (mentality, liberalism, morality, superstition, greed) of course fall into the latter.

Totalist language then, is repetitiously centered on all-encompassing jargon, prematurely abstract, highly categorical, relentlessly judging, and to anyone but its most devoted advocate, deadly dull: in Lionel Trilling's phrase, "the language of nonthought."


To be sure, this kind of language exists to some degree within any cultural or organizational group, and all systems of belief depend upon it. It is in part an expression of unity and exclusiveness: as Edward Sapir put it, "'He talks like us' is equivalent to saying 'He is one of us.'" The loading is much more extreme in ideological totalism, however, since the jargon expresses the claimed certitudes of the sacred science. Also involved is an underlying assumption that language - like all other human products - can be owned and operated by the Movement. No compunctions are felt about manipulating or loading it in any fashion; the only consideration is its usefulness to the cause.




For an individual person, the effect of the language of ideological totalism can be summed up in one word: constriction. He is, so to speak, linguistically deprived; and since language is so central to all human experience, his capacities for thinking and feeling are immensely narrowed. This is what Hu meant when he said, "using the same pattern of words for so long…you feel chained."

Actually, not everyone exposed feels chained, but in effect everyone is profoundly confined by these verbal fetters. As in other aspects of totalism, this loading may provide an initial sense of insight and security, eventually followed by uneasiness. This uneasiness may result in a retreat into a rigid orthodoxy in which an individual shouts the ideological jargon all the louder in order to demonstrate his conformity, hide his own dilemma and his despair, and protect himself from the fear and guilt he would feel should he attempt to use words and phrases other than the correct ones.

Or else he may adapt a complex pattern of inner division, and dutifully produce the expected cliché's in public performances while in his private moments he searches for more meaningful avenues of expression. Either way, his imagination becomes increasingly dissociated from his actual life experiences and may tend to atrophy from disuse.

"A discussion of what is most central in the thought reform environment can lead us to a more general consideration of the psychology of human zealotry. For in identifying, on the basis of this study of thought reform, features common to all expressions of ideological totalism, I wish to suggest a set of criteria against which any environment may be judged - a basis for answering the ever-recurring question: "Isn't this just like 'brainwashing'?"


These criteria consist of eight psychological themes which are predominant within the social field of the thought reform milieu. Each has a totalistic quality; each depend upon an equally absolute philosophical assumption; and each mobilizes certain individual emotional tendencies, mostly of a polarizing nature. In combination they create an atmosphere which may temporarily energize or exhilarate, but which at the same time poses the gravest of human threats. "
