Multiple Methods in Scientology

Hubbard used lots of methods. He explained back in 52 that he found hypnosis worked sometimes and failed at others, it worked on some people but not others.

He took hundreds perhaps thousands of methods from hypnosis and he never overcome his problem: hypnosis works sometimes but not others, on some people but not others.

If a hypnosis techniques isn't working on you you of course may become bored. Hubbard addressed that in several ways. In his study tech he said it indicated his fictional MUs were present. This prompted confusion as a Scientologist understood what he read but also knew he must have MUs.

In this confusion the Scientologist looks for an MU, picks a word to clear then intakes the defitions of that word and follows the M3 word clearing procedure which induces confusion and anxiety as well. Both confusion and anxiety increase suggestibility. The suggestible Scientologist takes in definitions and usually has no doubts regarding the definitions being correct.

The definitions include English words and Hubbard's loaded language. In confusion and anxiety a moment of cognitive dissonance occurs, the Scientologist knows they understand but knows they must not - but they know Hubbard must be right. In cognitive dissonance a moment of intense confusion with hesitation and mental blankness occurs.

The blankness is described by Hubbard as accompanying his MU in MU phenomenon. In that state of confusion a person is vulnerable to suggestions.

So Hubbard has them take in definitions. The very clever twist is that Hubbard has a Scientologist take in Scientology terms and English words too. The seemingly beneficial effects from taking in English words mask the indoctrination in Scientology terms. They alternate in Scientology indoctrination and so it takes the understanding to see each on its own and both together to comprehend the full effect.

You are bored, but understand the material, but know you must not understand. The lie up against the opposite truth creates cognitive dissonance and mental blankness.

The resolution is submission to Hubbard's authority. The choice relieves the dissonance. In conflict a choice whether right or wrong can take conscious attention off the dissonance and relieve the pressure on the conscious mind. This is the brightening up Hubbard described in word clearing. It's a temporary relief as the subconscious still has unresolved issues.

When one denies the contradictions strongly enough in submission to Hubbard's authority they are in trance logic. Trance logic is a state in hypnosis in which suggestibility is very high, contradictions are not noticed and critical and independent thinking are highly reduced. Age regression also occurs in trance logic and magical thinking is easily accepted. Sound like Scientology ?
