Sometimes people ask about the basic ideas in Scientology and it is easy after twenty five years in to forget that most people don't know them. Now I don't believe a word of Scientology myself at this point. I will try to lay out the ideas a Scientologist is likely to get exposed to here. The following post is a description of what a Scientologist learns as the story of their past. It is the story of an existence as an immortal being that suffered a very long decline then ended up on Earth as a human over hundreds of quadrillions of years.

This is explained to you as a process called the dwindling spiral and claimed by Ron Hubbard to be capable of being stopped and reversed with Scientology auditing and indoctrination.

In Scientology you get it in stages usually. First you might hear the story that man is an immortal spiritual being. Then some pseudo Buddhist cover story about past lives. That includes a claim that Hubbard did scientific research that resulted in indisputable evidence that people have lived past lives and can accurately recall them.
Well, if you have led a billion past lives as a spirit who leaves your body then enters another as a baby to start another it stands to reason you have future lives coming too.

In Hubbard's version of eternal life thetans long ago, as in hundreds of quadrillions of years, were each the equivalent of God, all knowing and all powerful with a universe like the physical universe entirely of their own . A thetan created and controlled its universe effortlessly by decision alone.

As the story goes thetans established contact with each other and had a series of universes they inhabited. The individual thetan had its power and awareness decline over eons, declining from being a God within its own universe to becoming the seventh dynamic , a spiritual force within the physical universe, then becoming the sixth, a primarily physical power with a spirit as its basis, meaning it lost its spiritual powers to a significant degree, then it declines to being involved with life, perhaps evolving species on a planet over millions of years or billions, with possibly eons like this going from planet to planet.

At this point it can control entire armies of bodies in competition with other thetans. It commits genocide and destroys entire planets and species at will. This entire process makes use of a thetan's primary liability within the physical universe. Here a thetan can go effect of its overts. It can by postulate make itself vulnerable, and only by its own postulate.

Back in its own universe it was the only real thing, everything and everyone else was an illusion of its creation. It was the only actual spirit, so it was the only being and as everyone and everything else was fake it couldn't actually do evil to illusions, so it wasn't bothered by anything it did and remained invincible.

By coming to other universes in a series it would try to harm or rob or destroy other thetans and armies of bodies. It over time postulated destruction, pain and degradation for others. Being basically good it came to regret killing, imprisoning and hurting other thetans and living beings.
It wanted to limit its ability to inflict harm and by postulate over a long time through many decisions it limited itself. It committed so many overts against bodies it came to sympathize with them and expressed that ultimately by identifying with them.

The fullest way it could identify with a body was to simulate becoming one. It could do that by picking them up and forgetting its true past and abilities. It wanted to forget its past as it did harm it couldn't escape. Psychs in whole track space opera societies used much more advanced super technology to imprison, torture and implant thetans to degrade, neutralize and control them.

Psychs get the lion's share of blame for the decline of beings as Hubbard claims they twisted and bent thetans' minds to fulfill the evil purposes they had been implanted with themselves long ago. Hubbard acts like psychs through hundreds of methods took advantage of every weakness and vulnerability thetans had to make a bad situation billions of times worse.

It declines to just controlling one species at a time. An infinite drop in power from its long ago origins. It does evil and regrets it and solves this with its arsenal of tools. Amnesia, self deception and restraining its power and reach again.

So, at this point a thetan declines down to being a group by controlling a group of bodies, with its OT abilities declining the entire way. It can no longer control an entire species as it did earlier.

It spends time controlling groups of bodies, eventually failing at this. Then it became the second dynamic, meaning it just ran a family unit, one at a time. The exact details are not spelled out to my knowledge. Then it becomes one body at a time finally.

This has its own long story as it is convinced it is just capable of running one body at a time with perhaps a few dozen OT abilities left. Things like telepathy, telekinesis, precognition, exteriorization, healing, generating energy, and a few other powers still existed. Obviously at infinitesimal levels compared to the glorious heights of long, long ago.

Then thetans that ended up at Earth were collected up by Xenu and taken here and implanted. Billions and billions were combined into composite beings. Some ended up in clusters from the same incidents. Some retained slight OT abilities. But those were in rapid decline, with almost all OT abilities seemingly neutralized for most thetans by the last few centuries. Certainly room was left for Buddha and mages to have a smidge of power left for the occasional miracle.

Hubbard claims that since the Xenu incident this sector of the galaxy has been a wasteland. That it is an empire that collapsed. Like the idea of the long night in science fiction. In some stories a vast empire like in Star Wars or Dune has a huge collapse, usually after a war, and the formerly connected worlds go into isolation and may decline and even lose access to faster than light travel and even forget they ever were more than single planet level civilizations, or single system.

Hubbard acts like huge empires of a hundred or so planets are or were the norm. With our sector like a war torn abandoned wasteland. Abandoned and utterly forgotten.
So this is all available in tapes and books like History of Man. And policy letters and bulletins. Some is from the theta mest theory in Science of Survival.

The only confidential parts I just described are Xenu and the body thetans and the implanting as clusters. The BTs have different states and problems. Some are easier to find and audit, some are sleeping, some are bound up in clusters.

Picture two lines to follow. The thetans are seen as invisible, intangible spirits without age or gender. Bodies are born, live and die. A thetan picks up a body by getting linked to a baby then staying with that body until death. After death the thetan goes to the between lives area. It usually goes to an implant station where it receives mind controlling implants.

Then it follows the implanted command to return to the planet it is associated with and it forgets its entire life while finding a pregnant woman and picks up the new body by moving into the baby itself. BTs have their own histories and in them have declined to a lower level of ability. So thetans need to audit them to free both. Again I don't believe a word of it.

Once in a while I get a question about body thetans. Sometimes people think BTs are destroyed or like pests you remove on the OT levels. In Scientology you are described as liberating them, not harming them.

Really you are supposedly a thetan capable of running a body. You are the operator of your body in Scientology terms so the BTs are passengers. By doing the OT levels they are freed by you.

So in Scientology you are not a BT. Just being able to operate a body puts you spiritually well above a BT. I of course don't believe a single word of this.

The exact path through every course and reference I ever read and every tape I ever heard is difficult to recall. Sadly, I do not have an eidetic memory.

I can tell you the theta mest theory is in Science of Survival. The statement by Hubbard"In the beginning was a decision, and the decision was to be," is in the Factors. That is a simple way to say something decided to exist. The Factors to my knowledge have the simplest language on the origin story and go back the furthest in time, but lack fine details.

Much of Scientology's origin story is in the Philadelphia Doctorate Course  lectures series of tapes. Additionally the book History of Man has an extensive history of the implantation of thetans and even some information on space opera type wars and adventures. The OT confidential information I described is in the course materials for OT III to OT VII and also in the class VIII auditor course.  Again I want to emphasize BTs, Xenu, the specific incidents with clusters and the idea of your problems being caused by Body thetans - although roughly mentioned in earlier materials - is not spelled out until OT III and only one to five percent of Scientiologists ever see these materials while in the cult.

So the "normal" Scientology experience involves a very different education.
