Mockingbird's Nest: Is Scientology Fascist?

This is a great question!

First, let's see what fascism is!

I recently read How Fascism Works. I highly recommend this short and simple book for anyone who wants to understand what fascism is and how a government or group qualifies or fails to qualify as fascist.

The author Jason Stanley gave an interview in which he described the traits of fascism. I am going to quote a few select excerpts to lay it out:

"Fascism is a patriarchal cult of the leader, who promises national restoration in the face of supposed humiliation by a treacherous and power-hungry global elite, who have encouraged minorities to destabilize the social order as part of their plan to dominate the “true nation,” and fold them into a global world government. The fascist leader is the father of his nation, in a very real sense like the father in a traditional patriarchal family. He mobilizes the masses by reminding them of what they supposedly have lost, and who it is that is responsible for that loss – the figures who control democracy itself, the elite; Nazi ideology is a species of fascism in which this global elite are Jews.

The future promised by the fascist leader is one in which there are plentiful blue collar jobs, reflecting the manly ideals of hard work and strength. In Nazi propaganda, many white collar jobs, the domain of Jews – running department stores, banking – were for the idle. And the fascist nation’s heart and soul is the military – as Hitler writes, “[w]hat the German people owes to the army can be briefly summed up in a single word, to wit: everything.” The fascist future is a kind of restoration of a glorious past, but a modern version – replete with awesome technology that glorifies the nation to the world. The German V-2 rocket was a characteristic representation of Nazi might. The fascist future is, in the famous description of Jeffrey Herf, a kind of reactionary modernism.

Fascist propaganda

Fascism uses propaganda as a way of mobilizing a population behind the leader. Fascist propaganda creates an awesome sense of loss, and a desire for revenge against those who are responsible. In the face of the supposed betrayal of the nation during World War I by Jewish “vipers,” Hitler describes the proper response to have been to place the “leaders of the whole movement…behind bars.” Hitler writes, “[a]ll the implements of military power should have been ruthlessly used for the extermination of this pestilence. The parties should have been dissolved, the Reichstag brought to its senses, with bayonets if necessary, but, best of all, dissolved at once.” The goal of fascist propaganda is to mobilize a population to violently overthrew multi-party democracy and replace it with the leader.

Fascism is not an ideology consigned to Europe. Black American intellectuals from W.E.B. Du Bois to Toni Morrison have spoken of American fascism. America has a long history of anti-Semitism similar to Nazi anti-Semitism, central to the ideology not just of the Ku Klux Klan, but to Henry Ford’s “The International Jew.” In its American version, communist Jews supposedly use Black liberation movements, control of Hollywood, and labor unions to destroy the nation in the service of a global elite. We should not be surprised at all by the rise of a fascist movement in the United States. And if it does arise, it would be no surprise if it did so in the party that keeps alive the “lost cause” myths of the American South."

"Worldwide, there have been many fascist movements. Not all fascist movements focus on a global Jewish conspiracy as the enemy, and not all of them were genocidal. Early on, Italian fascism was not anti-Semitic in its core, though it later turned that way. British fascism was not genocidal (though it also was never given the opportunity to be). The most influential fascist movement that takes a shadowy Jewish conspiracy as its central target is German fascism, Nazism. Nazism did not start out in genocide. It began with militias and violent troops disrupting democracy. In its early years in power, in the 1930s, it was socialists and communists who were targeted for the Concentration Camps, torture, and murder. But it must never be forgotten where Nazism culminated." End quote.

Okay, we have some important points to start with.

Fascism involves a patriarchal cult of the leader.

Fascism promises a great restoration.

Fascism claims a terrible betrayal occurred.

The fascist leader is like a father to his followers.

The fascist leader reminds them of what they have lost.

Fascism gives people someone to blame for their situation.

The fascist leader promises a future with manly values and prosperity won by those values.

Okay, we have a lot to work with here and go point by point in looking at Scientology. I wss in Scientology for twenty five years, so hopefully I can find some relevant information.

I have examined Scientology extensively against several models of cultic influence such as the eight criteria for thought reform by Robert Jay Lifton, the six conditions for thought reform by Margaret Singer, the BITE model by Steven Hassan and several others by people such as Rick Alan Ross, Janja Lalich, Alexandra Stein, Daniel Shaw and several others.

I have spent hundreds of hours looking at this question and read dozens of books to form an educated opinion.

In my opinion Scientology definitely has a paternalistic cult at its core. Many members have Scientology founder Ronald Hubbard as a God like guru and father figure. Some people have David Miscavige, current Scientology leader, in this role and some have the doctrine or technology of Scientology in this role.

I have written extensively on this and my analyses of this topic could fill a small collection of books.

I will spare you all that and just post a few links to articles that go into this further.

To my mind Scientology completely fulfills the first criteria for being a fascist organization.

Fascism promises a great restoration.

I should explain that in Scientology doctrine and practices great emphasis is put on the use of Scientology techniques.

Here is a quote from Keeping Scientology Working series one, A reference that Scientology requires cult members to read over and over and over in their indoctrination. It is not unusual for a Scientology cult member to read it hundreds of times over several years of indoctrination.

“We’re not playing some minor game in Scientology. It isn’t cute or something to do for lack of something better.

The whole agonized future of this planet, every man, woman and child on it, and your own destiny for the next endless trillions of years depend on what you do here and now with and in Scientology.

This is a deadly serious activity. And if we miss getting out of the trap now, we may never again have another chance.

In numerous references Hubbard makes it clear with repetition-with-variation that there is a problem and only Scientology can restore what has been lost.

“In fifty thousand years of history on this planet alone, Man never evolved a workable system. It is doubtful if, in foreseeable history, he will ever evolve another.

Man is caught in a huge and complex labyrinth. To get out of it requires that he follow the closely taped path of Scientology.” [Ronald Hubbard, Safeguarding Technology]

“We're free men and women -- probably the last free men and women on Earth.... If we don't do a good job now we may never get another chance.”[Ronald Hubbard, Your Post]

Hubbard portrays a degradation of spiritual beings at the hands of “psychs” (psychiatrists that he claims existed for billions of years or much longer in previous civilizations on other worlds with vastly superior technology, technology they used to imprison and entrap immortal spirits, spirits who ended up on earth as the people we know today, in a severely diminished state thanks to the psychs)

The reference “Pain and Sex” illustrates many of these principles.

“There are two items in this universe that cause more trouble than many others combined.

One is PAIN.

The other is SEX.

One should know more about these things.

They may have applications but they are used by destructive beings in great volume to cave others in.

Despite the false data of Freud, psychologists, psychiatrists and other criminals, they are not native to a being. They are only artificial wavelengths. They have exact frequencies that can be manufactured. A being or a machine can synthesize either one.

Pain becomes a lock on a being's abhorrence for misalignment of his own electrical flows. It is a lock upon unconsciousness which shuts off knowingness.

Sex is a lock on and perversion of the "joy of creation" which involves a whole being and expands him, but by using just one wavelength, sex, this can be perverted and he contracts.

When pain enters a scene, a being withdraws, contracts and can go unconscious.

When sex enters the scene, a being fixates and loses power.

Destructive creatures who do not want people big or reaching -- since they are terrified of punishment due to their crimes -- invented pain and sex to shrink people and cut their alertness, knowingness, power and reach.

Thus, you see people who are "experiencing" either pain or sex introverting and not producing much.

Pain and sex were the INVENTED tools of degradation.

Believe it or not, a being can be so overwhelmed by either that he or she becomes an addict of it. Priests become flagellants and cut themselves to pieces with self-whipping. Torturers drool over pain. Lovers are very seldom happy. People do the most irrational things when overcharged with sex, and prostitutes use it as a knowing stock-in-trade. Combined, pain and sex make up the insane Jack-the-Rippers (who killed only prostitutes) and the whole strange body of sex-murder freaks, including Hinckley*, and the devotees of late-night horror movies. Under the false data of the psychs (who have been on the track a long time and are the sole cause of decline in this universe) both pain and sex are gaining ground in this society and, coupled with robbery which is a hooded companion of both, may very soon make the land a true jungle of crime.

Go into an asylum or a prison and look at the increasing institutional population and know what you are looking at. In the main, these are pain and sex addicts, decadent and degraded and no longer capable. They were sent on that route down through the ages by the psychs and here they are still in the psychs' hands! And do they get well or go straight? Oh no. Whether in prisons or insane asylums they just get worse. And the psychs in both places rub their bloodied hands as they turn their products loose again upon the remaining population! It's no accident. And the stocks-in-trade of psychs are PAIN and SEX. They will even tell you it's "natural" to steal!

To compound their felony -- if that is possible -- they tell you it's the body doing it. Another crashing big false datum on top of all their other lies.

These are data which emerged from recent thorough research of the whole track. This is not theory or some strange opinion. It is provable electronic fact. The waves are just synthesized.”

The universe does not happen to be either destructive or chaotic except as such obsessed creeps make it. Statements it is otherwise are just more false data from the same suspect "authorities." It fits their purposes to make seem natural what they make artificially. The universeonly seems that way to a being because such loathsome psychotics make it seem so. They destroyed every great civilization to date and are hard at work on this one. The one thing they can't stand is the light of truth, so despite their objections, one must turn it on them. Only in its glare do their lies wither. It is the potent weapon they can't fend off.” Ronald Hubbard

Note Hubbard said “psychs (who have been on the track a long time and are the sole cause of decline in this universe)” and “Freud, psychologists, psychiatrists and other criminals” clearly showing that there is a decline, psychs are the sole cause of this decline and further that psychologists and psychiatrists are criminals! Not some, most, or many!

You may have trouble believing the idea that Hubbard specifically described civilizations that allegedly existed millions, billions or trillions or quadrillions of years ago as being run by psychs with super technology for implanting beings.

Evidence should be provided for such claims, so here is another excerpt, this time from A taped lecture:

In a lecture called Aberration and the Fifth Dynamic, Hubbard stated:

"...take a sheet of glass and put it in front of the preclear -- clear, very clear glass -- which is supercooled, preferably about a -100 centigrade. You got that? Supercooled, you know? And then put the preclear right in front of this supercooled sheet of glass and suddenly shove his face into the glass. Now, that's pretty good. I mean, that was developed about five billion years ago by a whole-track psychiatrist ..... The mechanism of brainwashing which I gave you, with supercold mechanisms and so forth, is very well known, was used very extensively in the Maw Confederation of the Sixty-third Galaxy. They had a total psychiatric control of all of their officers and executives, and when they got tired of them they used this specific method of brainwashing." (Hubbard, Aberration and The Sixth Dynamic transcript, catalog #5611C13 15ACC-22)

So, it's clear that Scientology fulfills all our criteria for fascism!

We have ample evidence for each point!

I want to give a few more quotes from others to emphasize the nature and history of Scientology.

“Scientology is both immoral and socially obnoxious…It is corrupt sinister and dangerous. It is corrupt because it is based on lies and deceit and has its real objective money and power for Mr. Hubbard… It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices both to its adherents who do not toe the line unquestionably and to those who criticize it or oppose it. It is dangerous because it is out to capture people and to indoctrinate and brainwash them so they become the unquestioning captives and tools of the cult, withdrawn from ordinary thought, living, and relationships with others.” — Justice Latey, ruling in the High Court of London

“[The court record is] replete with evidence [that Scientology] is nothing in reality but a vast enterprise to extract the maximum amount of money from its adepts by pseudo scientific theories… and to exercise a kind of blackmail against persons who do not wish to continue with their sect…. The organization clearly is schizophrenic and paranoid, and this bizarre combination seems to be a reflection of its founder, L.Ron Hubbard.” —Judge Breckenridge, Los Angeles Superior Court

“Scientology is evil; its techniques are evil; its practice is a serious threat to the community, medically, morally, and socially; and its adherents are sadly deluded and often mentally ill…(Scientology is) the world’s largest organization of unqualified persons engaged in the practice of dangerous techniques which masquerade as mental therapy.” –Justice Anderson, Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia

You might say, that Scientology has the psychs as a long ago enemy in a science fiction story but that real fascists like the Nazis see themselves as superior to others and pick someone to call inferior, to dehumanize, and finally to take the rights from, even going to the ultimate extreme of genocide!

You are right. In response to this last attempt to deny that Scientology is a fascist organization in reality I present the final piece of the puzzle.

What follows is an excerpt from an article by Jeffrey Augustine at The Scientology Money Project:

HOMO NOVIS

In June of 1957, L. Ron Hubbard took the first ideological step of declaring Scientologists to be a new and distinct race that was separate from, and superior to, homo sapiens. This spurious and hateful distinction allowed Hubbard to inject the diabolical element of racial superiority into the minds of Scientologists:

[Re: “Homo Scientologicus”] : “Man had to cease to be Homo Sapiens and had to become Homo Scientologicus in order to accomplish any action that was anywhere near efficient in South Africa.” — L. Ron Hubbard, PAB 119 1 September 1957 The Big Auditing Problem

Hubbard elaborated upon his notion of Scientologists as a master race in 1965:

“HOMO NOVIS, 1. Homo man, novis, new. (BCR, p. 12) 2. a theta-animated mest body possessed of new and desirable attributes; a mest clear, a good, sane rational mest being about a skyscraper higher than Homo sapiens. (HOM, p. 40) 3. the Second Stage Release is definitely Homo novis. The person ceases to respond like Homo sapiens and has fantastic capability to learn and act. (HCOB 28 Jun 65)” — L. Ron Hubbard, Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary

Hubbard called all non-Scientologists “wogs” and dehumanized them by writing that wogs weren’t even trying, i.e. that were worthless and lazy:

3. Any non-Scientologist is a “wog,” someone who “isn’t even trying.”

Having declared non-Scientologists to be racially inferior to Scientologists allowed Hubbard to dehumanize them in the minds of his followers. Indeed, Hubbard stated in writing that the members of the inferior race were to be treated like game animals during hunting season, for Hubbard declared them to be Fair Game:

ENEMY — SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.

THE SCIENTOLOGY MASTER RACE FRAMEWORK

By 1967, Hubbard had established the brutally simple ideological framework of the Scientology Master Race Cult:

1. Homo Novis – the superior race composed of Scientologists.

2. Homo Sapiens – wogs, i.e. the inferior race.

3. Fair Game: The punishment that Homo Novis, as the superior race, was entitled to inflict on the inferior race.

GENOCIDE: QUIETLY AND WITHOUT SORROW

There was an even more sinister step needed to achieve Pax Scientology. This step was based on Hubbard’s tone scale. Using his own scale as a metric to judge the value of a person, Hubbard decreed that all persons who were 2.0 or lower on his scale had only two options in a Scientology World. From the pen of L. Ron Hubbard in his infamous book Science of Survival:

“The reasonable man quite ordinarily overlooks the fact that people from 2.0 down have no traffic with reason and cannot be reasoned with as one would reason with a 3.0. There are only two answers for the handling of people from 2.0 down on the tone scale , neither one of which has anything to do with reasoning with them or listening to their justification of their acts. The first is to raise them on the tone scale by un-enturbulating some of their theta by any one of the three valid processes . The other is to dispose of them quietly and without sorrow. Adders are safe bedmates compared to people on the lower bands of the tone scale. Not all the beauty nor the handsomeness nor artificial social value nor property can atone for the vicious damage such people do to sane men and women. The sudden and abrupt deletion of all individuals occupying the lower bands of the tone scale from the social order would result in an almost instant rise in the cultural tone and would interrupt the dwindling spiral into which any society may have entered. It is not necessary to produce a world of clears in order to have a reasonable and worthwhile social order; it is only necessary to delete those individuals who range from 2.0 down, either by processing them enough to get their tone level above the 2.0 line — a task which, indeed, is not very great, since the amount of processing in many cases might be under fifty hours, although it might also in others be in excess of two hundred — or simply quarantining them from the society. A Venezuelan dictator once decided to stop leprosy. He saw that most lepers in his country were also beggars. By the simple expedient of collecting and destroying all the beggars in Venezuela an end was put to leprosy in that country” —

In Hubbard’s world, it is Scientology processing or death for persons adjudged to be 2.0 or lower on the tone scale. If a person cannot be processed above 2.0, then that person, and all others like him, are to be disposed of, “quietly and without sorrow….” In other words, Hubbard and Scientology call for either a forced conversion to Scientology or genocide as a way to eliminate all of those people whom they consider to be at 2.0 and below.
