The Incomprehensibility Of Scientology Part 1: Defining Scientology
In dealing with Scientology people often comment on the same issues over and over being difficult or impossible to understand. The same kinds of issues are met by SMH aka shaking my head and comments about irony or hypocrisy.
I will try to address some of these concepts. Some are related and in my opinion a good understanding of certain facts or opinions regarding Scientology and Hubbard make them understandable and even predictable.
I am going to start with something that confuses a lot of people and it is intended to by design: the word Scientology itself and its meaning.
The word has an appearance it was chosen in part for it appears to be a combination of science and technology . So it looks doubly scientific to persuade people subtly , especially if used over and over .
I have written before how two others before Hubbard used the term . So he quite likely stole it . But he used it to seem to mean one thing , but in truth it meant another.
He claimed it was a method to free spiritual beings and a lot of other entirety untrue ideas . They are all false and meant to persuade and mislead people . If you want to understand Scientology you should note that those lies are used and by some believed but not really true at all.
The best real definition for Scientology to use is in my opinion : the will of Ron Hubbard . The authority of Ron Hubbard to tell people what to do, think, feel, believe, and even further an accompanying idea that Hubbard's methods are scientific in nature and infallible .
The concept of infallible perfection with miraculous results enhancing a wide array of abilities is what Hubbard wanted to firmly fix in the mind of every Scientologist , if possible . The more the better and the more unshakable certainty the better .
By saying Scientology he literally meant " my ideas , my statements , my commands " as in hypnotic commands . He expressly wanted a Scientologist to think Scientology is a subject like a science but superior in design and performance to any science developed by man . Really Scientology is Hubbard's authority to decide for others .
Try substituting the phrase "my authority over you" from Hubbard to you personally when looking at his use of the term Scientology and I think it will reveal much of his intent.
He wanted Scientologists to believe on a deep , deep subconscious level that his words are true to such a deep level that his will supplants the victims permanently. In other words once he indoctrinated a victim he wanted his ideas and directives to trump a victims thoughts , observations and definitely the effects any other influence may have .
He wanted a person to deny or dissociate from any evidence against his ideas and to have believing and obeying him to override thought , emotion or behavior that conflicts with his ideas .
That is Scientology. That type of relationship does exist at times in other contexts . Obviously it is the end result in many harmful cults . An abuser takes over the victims mind so thoroughly they become a pawn or slave that just in trauma and fear seeks to appease the abuser or master .
This is based on the same fundamental relationship dynamics as a highly abusive relationship of any other kind . The battered wife , the sexually abused child , the physically abused child all can play the same role as a kind of developed coping mechanism to survive abuse . It could be called a syndrome .
It has many symptoms and I earlier described Post Indoctrination Scientological Studies Educational Disorder . That is a humorous term abbreviated PISSED but the condition is quite real and has in truth even more symptoms than I ever described.
Now , Hubbard did not have any magic or potent will. He just used persuasive tools that existed long before he was born in subjects like hypnotism and rhetoric .
His result was to have Scientologists maintain the state in their own minds to cope with needing things they feel will be taken away if they doubt Hubbard , his methods or anything he said .
That deeply ingrained emotional need often trumps evidence , contradictory statements by Hubbard , common sense and really anything else. Until that is somehow set aside or somehow overcome once it has been firmly achieved acting like you are dealing with a person open to evidence or logic is often useless . There are exceptions and times direct observation of evidence have created a crack in the self defending deception from Hubbard , but it is not fruitful to act like a fanatical cult member is a normal person in a normal situation.
In reframing Scientology a person can merely consider Hubbard as using the above description and in my opinion much of the effect of his lies can be removed . And for a never in dissecting Scientology the act can be eased by considering Hubbard to covertly create the desired effect in his victims while they are unaware of his intent . Understand that his use of the term has the effect on his victims of convincing them within the context of their cult experience of using undue influence to make the desired result.
That is the first incomprehensible idea I wanted to explore .
